A Day In Melaka

Some of you may or may not know that my family is mostly from Melaka, and a majority of my heritage is Peranakan/Baba Nyonya. However, it is actually quite the rare occasion that I get to travel to my family's hometown, so everytime I get to go it is a treat.

I only had a day and a night down, so I'll just keep this short and sweet.

Baboon House was one of the places we had lunch. They're known for their burgers; mainly the porky kind. We had two Aloha Pork Belly burgers (RM27.80), and a chicken one (RM17.20).

I honestly favoured the Oriental Date Tea (RM9.50) over the burgers, but the cafe's still a place worth visiting.

The interior is kind of like voodoo meets colonial antique - they've got their Chinese name printed over an entrance, but the foyer also has some tribal-looking decor made from natural elements like wood and coconut husk.

Gorgeous sunlight filters into the heart of the cafe from the open ceiling, while plants with vines woven into the brickwork line the edge of the floor, and a mosaic mural of some otherworldly creature spans across the dilapidated wall. If not for the food I'd go back for the view.

We spent most of our hours around Jonker Walk even though it is a Tuesday, so there isn't the street market to browse through, but there's plenty to keep ourselves occupied. We luck out on the alcoholic popsicles we were looking for, but at least we manage to snag a couple of freshly made 饼 to bring home anyway.

It's funny how I find pieces of KL now in Melaka, or vice versa. That sort of describes the way I am too. At night, we go to one of my family's favourite food courts to have ikan pari bakar, char kway teow with plum sauce (only available in Melaka), and honey barbequed chicken wings. Newton is a staple for us, just like the carrot milk I order every chance I get. Everyone went home immensely satisfied with that meal - and I am grateful and happy to have shared it with them.

Until next time,
xoxo
